Danbury City Council Approves Bipartisan Police Recruitment Ordinance for DACA & LPR Residents
In a decisive 18-2 bipartisan vote, the Danbury City Council approved a crucial municipal ordinance updating hiring requirements for the Danbury Police Department.
The reform aligns Danbury’s local civil service criteria with the State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POSTC) guidelines, permitting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) who hold active legal federal work authorization to apply to become Danbury police officers.
Rigorous Vetting and High Professional Standards
Advocates emphasized during council debate that the ordinance does not lower any qualifying standards:
- Identical Rigor: All applicants, regardless of status, must pass identical civil service written examinations, physical agility fitness tests, comprehensive background investigations, polygraphs, psychological evaluations, and POSTC Police Academy training.
- Multilingual Public Safety: Danbury is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Connecticut, with significant Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking populations. Expanding the recruitment pool will help ensure our police force can communicate seamlessly with all residents during emergency situations.
- Addressing Staffing Shortages: Municipalities across the country are facing law enforcement recruitment shortages. Opening pathways to patriotic young residents who grew up in Danbury and want to protect their hometown strengthens our public safety foundation.
Council Leadership Comments
City Council leaders praised the pragmatic spirit behind the measure:
“This ordinance is about fairness, public safety, and smart governance. These are young men and women who grew up in our neighborhoods, attended Danbury High School, and want to serve and protect their neighbors. If someone is legally authorized to work, passes every rigorous test, and is willing to put their life on the line for Danbury, City Hall should welcome them with open arms.”
